The city was affected by both the 1971 Sylmar earthquake and the 1994 Northridge quake. There was excessive damage to buildings and even Magic Mountain had damage to some of the structure of the rides. Santa Clarita is also prone to many fires, partly due to its dry warm weather. There are a lot of hills with thick dry brush in the surrounding areas.  The early hot summer months are known as "Fire Season".  The city has received a little of everything as far as weather is concerned.  Wind, rain and snow have all been seen at one point. The current mayor is Frank Ferry. The City of Santa Clarita prioritizes recreational programs for its community. It feels that the more the youth of the community has to choose from as far as activities then it will keep them away from crime. The City has 17 parks in different neighborhoods in the area. Many of the parks have different activities that they offer to the community.

 

The parks also sponsor summer concerts with different music every week. The many programs that are offered can be found in the SEASONS magazine that is distributed to all the residents of the community. Though the city of Santa Clarita does not have its own police dept.
